Safeguarding at Leisure United

At Leisure United, safeguarding is at the heart of everything we do. We are committed to creating safe, welcoming and inclusive environments where children, young people and adults at risk can enjoy sport, physical activity and community programmes with confidence. Our Safeguarding and Welfare Policy sets out the standards, responsibilities and procedures we follow to protect those who access our services, ensuring that concerns are taken seriously, acted upon appropriately, and that everyone is treated with dignity, respect and care. We expect all staff, volunteers, coaches, trustees and partners to share this commitment and play their part in promoting a culture of safety and wellbeing.

What we stand for

  • 1

    Prevention

We put clear standards, training and safe working practices in place to prevent harm and create fun, welcoming spaces for everyone.

  • 2

Reporting – Speak Up, We’re Listening

We make it easy to raise a concern, with designated Welfare Officers available across our hubs to listen and take action.

  • 3

Investigation and Resolution – Taking Every Concern Seriously

We respond promptly, handle concerns fairly and work with the right safeguarding agencies to help keep people safe.

Our five Rs of safeguarding good practice

Every member of the Leisure United team is trained to apply the following approach in their everyday work.

  1. Recognise

  2. Respond

  3. Report

  4. Record

  5. Refer

Our commitments

  • Internal policy

Our policy is reviewed every three years or sooner if legislation or guidance changes. Last reviewed May 2026

  • Designated Welfare Officers

If you have a safeguarding concern we have Welfare Officers available at each site who can support you.

  • Statutory partnerships

We work in partnership with the Police, Children’s Social Services, County FAs and Local Safeguarding Children Boards.

  • Photography guidelines

All staff follow LU’s best-practice photography guidelines. Unauthorised photographing or filming of children is reported immediately.

Designated welfare contacts

Each Leisure United hub has a designated Welfare Officer, who is the first point of contact for safeguarding concerns at the site. Welfare Officers receive concerns, support those involved and ensure matters are reported and escalated appropriately.

Who Does Our Safeguarding Policy Apply To?

Our Safeguarding and Welfare Policy applies to everyone working for or on behalf of Leisure United, including employees, casual and agency workers, contractors, consultants, suppliers, volunteers and any other individual employed or engaged by Leisure United. Partner organisations using or delivering activities at our hubs are expected to maintain safeguarding arrangements that meet or exceed Leisure United’s required standards and to work with us whenever a concern relates to our activities, staff or service users. The policy supports the protection of all children and adults at risk who visit, use or participate in activities at our hubs.

Our Safeguarding Policy will next be reviewed in May 2029
